The best AI Spanish tutor in 2026, by what you're stuck on

The four AI Spanish tools people actually use — Hola Clarita, Duolingo Max, Langua and ChatGPT — compared on the only thing that decides whether you learn anything: which one gets a beginner to produce Spanish.

The short answer.

Four tools, judged on the one question that decides whether you learn anything: which of them gets a beginner to produce Spanish. We wrote this page, so we argue our case — and we say plainly where we are not the right tool.

The best AI Spanish tutor for a beginner is Hola Clarita: a course in order, a tutor that grades what you write and say, and a model of what you have actually learned. Duolingo Max and Langua are stronger on conversation once you can already hold a sentence, and ChatGPT is the best free answer to a one-off question.

  • Starting out, and not sure what to do today? Hola Clarita. The course decides what you study, and every session ends with feedback on Spanish you produced yourself — that is the whole product.
  • Already holding sentences and want volume? Duolingo Max or Langua. Both will give you far more conversation practice in an evening than we will.
  • One grammar question, right now, for free? ChatGPT. It will answer in ten seconds, and often better than a lesson would.
  • Whichever you pick, pick one that makes you produce Spanish. Recognising the right answer on a screen is not the skill you came here for.

Before you compare

Four questions that sort the field.

Almost every AI Spanish tool can hold a conversation now. That stopped being a differentiator the moment a good language model became cheap. What separates them is everything around the conversation.

Answer these four and the shortlist picks itself.

  • Who decides what you do today? You, or the product? A tool that answers whatever you ask is a tool you have to plan for. That is fine for a motivated learner and fatal for a beginner, who by definition does not know what to do next.
  • What happens to what you got wrong? An explanation you read once fades. A correction that comes back as a specific thing to revise is the entire mechanism of learning a language. Ask any tool what it does with your mistakes.
  • What does it ask you to produce? Recognising Spanish and producing Spanish are different skills, and only one of them is what you wanted. Multiple choice and matching build the first. Nothing builds the second except writing and saying things yourself.
  • Does it know it is teaching you? A general assistant gives every learner the same quality of answer, and forgets you when the chat ends. A course has a level, a sequence, and a record of what you have done.

Side by side

The practical comparison.

All four are honest tools. They are built for different parts of the problem — and only one of them is built for the part where you start speaking.

Duolingo, Langua and ChatGPT are theirs, not ours — check their own pages before you buy anything, including ours. Duolingo Max's AI features cover a subset of its courses, and Spanish is among them. Hola Clarita is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.

What you get here

Built for the half that makes you speak.

Everything below is the part a general language app leaves to you: knowing what to do, knowing what you got wrong, and knowing what to come back to.

01

A course, not a catalogue

Grammar, vocabulary and real-life situations in the order they make sense — so you are never choosing what to learn next from a wall of options.

02

Feedback on your own sentences

Clarita reads what you write and hears what you say, then tells you what worked and the one thing worth changing.

03

You revise, you don't restart

Your attempt stays on screen while you fix it, so the correction lands on the sentence you actually produced.

04

It remembers what you got wrong

Every session feeds a model of your Spanish. Anything shaky comes back later as a short review instead of quietly disappearing.

Which one is yours

One of these is built for starting.

Pick Hola Clarita if…

You want to say it, not tap it.

You recognise answers but freeze when it is your turn to build one. You want a beginner path instead of a wall of options, feedback on your own sentence, and another go at it while it is still on screen. That is the whole product.

The others are the better call if…

You want company, or a specific thing.

Duolingo and Langua are better at habit and volume, and ChatGPT is better at the one-off question. None of them will hold the course for you or grade the sentence you produce — and if a native App Store app matters to you, they have one and we do not.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the best AI Spanish tutor?

For a beginner who wants to speak, Hola Clarita — it is the only one of the four with a course in order and a tutor that grades what you actually produce. Duolingo Max and Langua are the better call for conversation volume once you can already hold a sentence, and ChatGPT is the best free option for a one-off grammar question.

Can an AI tutor really teach me Spanish?

Yes — an AI tutor can hold a conversation, correct what you write and say, and explain grammar accurately, which is most of what a human tutor does between lessons. What it cannot do on its own is hold the plan: an assistant that answers whatever you ask will happily let you spend six months on the parts of Spanish you already find easy. That is why ours is a course first and a tutor second, and why the structure matters more than the model behind it.

Is Duolingo Max worth it?

If you already use Duolingo daily and want speaking practice inside the app you like, Video Call and Roleplay are the reason to upgrade. Since Explain My Answer became free for everyone in January 2026, those two features are essentially all the Max tier adds for $29.99 a month. If speaking is the goal and you are choosing a tool from scratch, that money goes further here.

How much should an AI Spanish tutor cost?

Between free and about $30/month in 2026. Below that you are looking at a general assistant or a free app tier; above it you are usually paying for human tutors by the hour, which is a different product with different strengths. Hola Clarita is $12.99/month or $89.99/year after a 7-day free trial.

Should I use more than one?

You can, and plenty of people do. Keep the tool that gets you producing Spanish as your main one — that is where the speaking comes from — and use a general assistant for the questions that come up out of nowhere. If you keep only one, keep the one with the course.
